Yes, you need a wedding video… and here’s why

“Yes, you need a wedding video…and here’s why”
867c8f_1dcfb11d8ffa4818ad2b663dbeb12f9d If I had a dollar for every time I heard the phrase, ‘The one thing I wish I would have gotten is a wedding video’, then I would have A LOT more dollars. I hear stories all the time from couples who regret not having a professional video done. However, the couples I speak with who did have a professional video done say that it was some of the best money they ever spent.

So, where do you lie in the decision-making process? Chances are that you fall into one of three categories.

  • You know for sure you want a video and have budgeted for it
  • You or your fiancé are on the fence and don’t know if video is that important
  • You have said at some point, ‘Why would I ever need a wedding video?’

Let’s look at each option, shall we?
If you have decided to book a professional videographer, we in the business are grateful and will do our best to serve you well. Keep in mind, like every other vendor, videographers tend to book up very quickly, so be sure to book 6 to 12 months in advance. When deciding which company to partner with for your video, make sure you look at their work and see if it fits your personality and price point.

Remember, you get what you pay for. You may strike gold with a $500.00 bargain from somebody who is just starting out (we all start somewhere), but on average be prepared to invest between $2000.00 and $5000.00 for the right professional. Once you book, be sure that other vendors (photographer, DJ, wedding planner) and the church know that you hired a professional videographer for the day. It is nice to be able to communicate with each vendor in advance whenever possible so that your day flows seamlessly.

If you and your fiancé are looking at the budget and trying to find where to cut, try not to cut the camera man right away. Yes, I am sure your uncle owns a video camera. I also own an oven and don’t know how to bake a soufflé. Let your uncle or cousin enjoy your wedding with you…don’t ask them to record it. Again, you get what you pay for. If you pay nothing, expect nothing. When you pay a professional, they generally have multiple cameras, sound equipment, professional editing platforms and so on to ensure that you get a nice memory. It’s worth the dough to hire a pro.

If budget is not an issue, but you still are not sure whether you need a video, be pragmatic. Here are a few reasons why clients have hired us. If these are relevant to your situation, start calling around.

  • Your families are from different parts of the country and may not be able to attend.
  • Either you or your fiancé has that hilarious friend from the past who is in your wedding party.
  • Both families love to dance and you hired an awesome DJ.
  • A close family member is ill and this may be their last wedding.
  • You want this day to be perfect and you want to remember it as such.

If you are in the third category and do not believe you need a video, consider the value of video 2 or 5 or 10 years down the road. Regardless of how perfect your wedding day turns out, there will come days in your marriage where you and your spouse are not seeing eye-to-eye. Or perhaps your loved one has to go away on business or deploy with the military for an extended time. How nice would it be in those moments to at least sit down on the couch, pop in the video and be reminded of one of the best days of your life? This may be the best therapy you will ever invest in throughout your marriage.

From all of us in the wedding world to all of you, good luck in the planning process and have fun!
